What is Meadowsweet?
Meadowsweet is an herb in the rose family, and it has been used for many centuries for various health ailments, but is also very widespread in cultural history. It is best known for its incredibly delicious scent. I recognize myself in the description of the botanist Gerard who wrote well over 400 years ago: " the smell of it makes my heart cheerful and happy, and delights the senses ". That is exactly how I experience it: I become cheerful and happy, simply!
The plant has many exciting uses historically, and of course especially medicinal uses. However, in cultural history, the Vikings used meadowsweet to rub the inside of mead and beer vessels with meadowsweet to give the drink a better taste. Beekeepers rub the inside of their hives with meadowsweet to create more well-being and harmony in the bee population. 🐝 It actually sounds very clever, maybe we should take up that tradition here on the farm? 😊
In addition to many cultural and historical uses, largely due to its scent, it also has a long medical history. The tallest plant, with its reddish stem and beautiful white inflorescence, was actually important in the development of pain and fever-relieving medicine (it contains salicylic acid, so make meadowsweet tea and drink it for headaches). But despite the fact that they ended up switching to synthetic production of aspirin, etc., the fact is that meadowsweet has fever-reducing and pain-relieving properties. It has also been traditionally used a lot as a wound healer, bactericide and for pain relief in rheumatism. But, why do I want it in our green face mask?
Well, first of all, it smells so good that it “delights the senses” of Vossabia! And then the plant has a cleansing effect that means that meadowsweet can help with rashes, acne and it will be great as a cleanser for the skin. I am concerned that we get the most possible use out of the plants we use, and here meadowsweet is a good example: it has a lot of vitamin C and acts as an antioxidant, and adds such good nutrition to us, and in addition, it is cleansing, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial. Good cheekbones that 😊
Meadowsweet also contains salicylic acid, which is actually a natural peeler. Salicylic acid has an anti-inflammatory effect on the skin and can reduce redness, itching, rashes, and it is mentioned in various herbal forums that meadowsweet can therefore be useful for eczema and psoriasis as well.
Meadowsweet has become a popular herb in natural cosmetics outside of Norway, and that's especially because the fragrant plant is rich in tannins, which have an astringent effect. It's of course exciting in skin products, especially for those of us who have passed 45 😉 Meadowsweet is therefore well suited in toners, in ointments and, as here: in a face mask. We also have yarrow in it, and it is also known for its astringent effect, so it only gets better 😊 Yarrow is also a fantastically healthy plant that is great to use on the skin, among other things. Yarrow can work well against acne, wrinkles, varicose veins, wounds and it also increases blood circulation 👍
In this super-dense mask, I have used these two great plants, picked right outside my door, on my unique and very diverse old meadows. They have been accompanied by a jar of honey from my bees, delicious coconut oil and green clay. Together, it makes a completely wonderful face mask for both young and mature skin, women and men. And what about trying it together, maybe smearing each other's faces with this greasy, green stuff? Then it will definitely be cheerful, and all the senses will be awakened! I recommend this of course!
And maybe have a little fun with this green mask and enjoy a glass of sparkling meadowsweet drink in between? Check out the recipe and get out and pick this wonderful plant! 😁
Recipe:
How to do it:
Pour the flowers, sugar and citric acid into a stainless steel kettle or similar. Pour boiling water over and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Put on a lid, and let stand in the cold for 3 days. Strain the liquid and pour into bottles. 🍹I use plastic bottles/jugs that I then put in the freezer and have a delicious summer drink all year round.
🍹It can be used as juice (mix 1:3-4), or how about making MEADOW wort LIQUEUR: mix undiluted meadowwort juice with 40-45% alcohol in a ratio of, for example, 1:1. It makes a fresh, yellow summer liqueur that everyone can enjoy.
🍹Also, it's also very good to make MJØDURT BREW where you mix with carbonated water, perfect for a family birthday.
🍹MEAD SORBET is also deliciously fresh and good: 3 dl mead juice mixed with water 50/50, 2 quail eggs. Mix, whisk, freeze!
When the meadowsweet is as tall as Vossabia itself! Meadowsweet flower buds are incredibly aromatic and wonderful to use to make juice.
As I mentioned in the introduction, I want to give away some sample boxes of the delicious face mask, so you will have the chance to test it out ahead of the launch 💚🐝
Maybe you'll be as excited about the properties of meadowsweet as I am 🤩
